Engineering News-Record Recognizes Two HNTB Projects As National Best of the Best Projects for 2013
Kansas City, MO (PRWEB) January 08, 2014 -- Two of HNTB Corporation’s projects were named as Best of the Best Projects for 2013 by Engineering News-Record, an industry-leading publication that reports on design and construction. The firm’s work also was recognized with six regional ENR Best Projects awards.
“For 100 years, HNTB has helped create infrastructure that shapes our country and touches the lives of millions of people every day,” said Rob Slimp, PE, HNTB Infrastructure CEO. “It is an honor to see our projects recognized by the experts at ENR. These eight regional and national awards confirm HNTB’s enduring dedication to our clients and the work we provide them.”
The modernization and expansion of the University of California at Berkeley Memorial Stadium was awarded national Best of the Best in the Sports/Entertainment category. HNTB was architect, with Studios Architecture as associate architect, on the $480 million reconstruction of the 90-year-old facility, which includes a new student athlete training center, restoration of the historic façade, new concourses with concessions, and a new press box. Because the structure is located on the Hayward Fault, everything but the outer façade and east seating bowl was rebuilt from the ground up to create a seismically safe, more modern venue for Cal fans.
The new Tom Bradley International Terminal at Los Angeles International Airport was named national Best of the Best by ENR in the Airports/Transit category. HNTB is associate architect for the project and also led programming and planning. The project expanded the existing terminal by adding two concourses and 15 new contact gates; nine of the new gates will accommodate the latest double-decker aircraft. Additional work includes renovating the Customs and Border Protection area, improving the departures level amenities and adding a new baggage claim area.
In addition to the two national Best of the Best winners — which also both won regional honors from ENR California — HNTB’s winning regional Best Projects 2013 projects, awarded separately by ENR regional editions, included:
- Schuylkill River Parks Connector Bridge received a Best Project award in the Small Projects (under $10 million) category by ENR Mid-Atlantic. As the prime consultant, HNTB led the design of this new pedestrian bridge in Philadelphia. It spans across two mainline railroad tracks and connects Schuylkill River Park to the Schuylkill Banks greenway.
- I-495 Capital Beltway Express Lanes was awarded a Merit award in the Highway/Bridges category by ENR Mid-Atlantic. HNTB was lead designer and was responsible for all engineering efforts during the concept, preliminary and final design stages of the development of high occupancy toll lanes along a 14-mile section of Northern Virginia’s Capital Beltway, one of the most congested stretches of roadway in the country.
- Brightman Street Bascule Bridge Replacement received a Best Project award in the Highway/Bridge category from ENR New England. HNTB was the engineer-of-record for the project, which features a new, four-leaf bascule over the Taunton River, spanning 1,200 feet shore to shore and positioned 60 feet above the surface of the river.
- Brightman Street Bascule Bridge Replacement received a second Best Project award in the Safety category, also from ENR New England.
According to the publication’s website, the announcement of ENR’s national Best of the Best Projects winners culminated a seven-month effort to identify the pinnacle of design and construction achievement in the U.S. among projects completed between July 2012 and June 2013. There were about 700 entries for the 10 regional Best Projects competitions, with top winners in each category from each region moving on to the national competition. The entries were judged in terms of teamwork, safety, overcoming challenges, innovation and quality.
