(PRWEB) January 09, 2014 -- Criminal defense lawyer David Katz has been named as a faculty member of the National College for DUI Defense (NCDD). Katz is an Orlando DUI lawyer who has built his reputation on defending citizens accused of drunk driving in Orlando.
As faculty, Katz will help train other attorneys to build DUI defenses that work.
The NCDD was formed in 1994 in response to increased penalties for drunk drivers, according to the college's website (retrieved Jan. 4, 2014). As motorists faced tough punishments for what was once considered a minor crime, attorneys began to focus on DUI defense as a field and the NCDD sought the most experienced and competent faculty.
Katz is the founder of Katz & Phillips, P.A. law firm and aims his entire practice at DUI defense.
“To me it's an issue of fairness,” Katz said. “We all agree that drunk driving needs to be taken seriously, but what happens when aggressive enforcement catches sober drivers by accident? Or when regular people make an honest mistake, and lose their jobs over it?”
In Florida and many other states, Katz believes that drunk driving punishments have become disproportionate to the crime, especially for first time offenders.
“One bad decision can end up costing over $10,000,” he said. “Further you're likely to lose your license, which can make it hard to work.”
As NCDD faculty, Katz has helped instruct and mentor at seminars that prepare attorneys to become DUI Defense Law specialists certified by the American Bar Association.
“It's a way to help other lawyers, and indirectly help many more citizens.”
