Travel Expert and Entrepreneur Mark Murphy Encourages Students to "Travel Forward"
Princeton, NJ (PRWEB) January 12, 2014 -- Hun School alumnus, entrepreneur, author, travel expert, and adventurer Mark Murphy ’82 spoke at The Hun School on Tuesday, January 7th as a member of the School’s Centennial Speaker Series. Mr. Murphy used his adventures in business and travel to illustrate what he calls “Travel Forward” moments, a concept that is the topic and title of his most recent book.
Mr. Murphy explained, “Travel Forward is about moving your life forward. It’s about using travel as a metaphor to improve your business, your personal life, your relationships, your school work; it’s about moving forward.”
Mr. Murphy used anecdotes from his own world travel to describe how personal experiences heighten connections to the world community. He said, “One of the amazing things about travel is that it brings people together on a level that no social website, no text message, or anything else is going to do.” He continued, “To truly grasp a particular moment or situation, you have to experience it. Experiences are what are going to help you grow.”
Mr. Murphy spoke about the personal experiences that encouraged him to take a major leap of faith in 2002. While facing a career crossroads, he launched a dot.com business focused on travel and marketing, two industries struggling greatly in the wake of September 11th. He founded Performance Media, which now reaches more than 70,000 agents and works with the biggest names in the travel industry. Performance Media was recognized by Inc. Magazine for 3 straight years to be among the fastest growing media companies in the U.S. Mr. Murphy appears regularly on CNN, NBC, ABC, FOX, and CBS as a travel industry expert.
Of his entrepreneurial success, Mr. Murphy said, “People want to know: ‘what is it that fuels you?’ It’s finding that thing that really connects with you and moving your life forward. The one thing I would encourage all of you to do is – it doesn’t matter what a job pays, it doesn’t matter what something is going to reward you with initially – if you’re passionate about it, or you’re passionate about where you are going, take a chance and do it.”
