Lightspeed Systems Foundation Recognizes Outstanding Digital Learning Projects
Bakersfield, CA (PRWEB) January 13, 2014 -- The Lightspeed Systems Foundation, a fund of Kern Community Foundation serves administrators, educators, and students by awarding competitive grants and other charitable contributions that impact the learning community. Through Amazing Grants and Amazing Gifts, the Lightspeed Systems Foundation monetarily rewards K12 schools in the United States for outstanding digital learning projects that result in inspired teachers, engaged students, confident IT staff, and involved parents. The company is pleased to announce the 2013 Amazing Grant recipients.
Six schools across the country are being recognized for their commitment to establishing innovative learning projects in the classroom and Lightspeed Systems is proud to join them in their efforts. Through a comprehensive application and review process, these schools have demonstrated a fervent passion for inspiring students.
This month the following schools will receive an Amazing Grant through the Lightspeed Systems Foundation:
•William B. Bimat Elementary School, Bakersfield, CA – Local Economy and Commerce Project
Students will be engaged in a cross-grade level, cross-country, and cross-curricular in-depth study of economy and the local agriculture industry. Students will use mobile devices and other digital tools to work collaboratively on research projects, participate in webcasts with local industry leaders, create their own classroom commerce system, and more. The research projects will culminate in digital presentations shared through My Big Campus (the learning management system from Lightspeed Systems) Bundles.
•North Adams Community Schools, Decatur, IN – Digital Curriculum Development
Grant money will be used to support teachers’ efforts towards developing digital curriculum in all core subject areas. This will result in the integration of teaching and learning strategies that require students to demonstrate effective collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and advanced written and oral communication.
•Stocker Elementary School, Kenosha Unified School District, Kenosha, WI – Schoolwide eBook Initiative
With a commitment to support personalized learning, improve reading scores, and increase student engagement, Stocker Elementary will use Amazing Grant funds to purchase iPads and eBooks for students to lead discussions across classrooms, grade levels, and book clubs. Students will also use the devices to create multimedia presentations and reflections for peer review.
•Frank Elementary School, Kenosha Unified School District, Kenosha, WI – Field Work Comes Alive Project
Through the purchase of iPads with the help of an Amazing Grant, students at Frank Elementary will be able to make their field work projects come alive. This project will allow students to capture their field work experiences on the mobile device, bring their learning back to the classroom, and turn their experience into both printed field workbooks and digital portfolios of Learning Expeditions.
•Coast Unified School District, Cambria, CA – Minecraft in Education Digital Learning Project
Coast Unified will use the funds to support its Minecraft In Education Digital Learning Project. After a successful experience training teachers and students last summer, the district is excited to acquire needed hardware and digital resources to continue to host Minecraft in Education events throughout the county. The project will be disseminated and shared through My Big Campus.
•Batesville Community School Corporation, Batesville, IN – Digital Content Creation Initiative
Educators in the Batesville Community School Corporation will use the grant money to review resources, develop lessons, and use My Big Campus to create Bundles to enhance teaching and learning. Teachers will receive stipends to develop and collaborate during professional development sessions facilitated by the Instructional Technology Specialists on staff and the curricular content will be showcased and shared to all BCSC teachers. Funds will also go towards the purchase of various educational resources and tools for the classroom, such as curricular subscriptions or cameras.
