New Safety Guide Aims to Educate and Protect Escorts and Sex Workers in the UK
(PRWEB UK) 16 January 2014 -- According to the NUS (National Union of Students), there has been a significant increase in the amount of university students, both men and women, who are turning to the sex trade and escort industry in order to help fund their education.
This is being attributed to a number of factors. In 2012, the UK Government lifted the limit on what universities can charge for their programs and courses. This has caused costs to go up significantly – some institutions now charge as much as 9000 pounds per year. The government has also made cuts to the education maintenance allowance, forcing students to fund more of their education on their own.
The rising cost of living is also a major factor in this trend. According to government statistics, the cost of living in the UK has jumped 2.7% over last year. This is higher than anywhere else in the EU. Housing and food prices are rising faster than income, creating a real crisis for university students just starting out.
The English Collective of Prostitutes, which runs a helpline based in London, states that the number of calls from students has doubled in the past year.
The NUS estimates that up to 20% of women who work as lap dancers are students.
Anthon Long, the founder of Elite Escorting, saw the increase in Escort work among both men and women students. As a result of the influx, he created a safety guide for all workers in the Escort and sex trade workers business.
Titled, “Protect your Product: A Practical Guide to Staying Safe in the UK Sex Business,” the goal is to make sure that these workers stay safe and take the necessary precautions and measures to minimise the risk of violence and disease.
“Health and safety is about anticipating, protecting from, and minimising risk and its impact,” says Long.
The safety guide contains comprehensive and practical advice for both men and women and can be found here at http://www.eliteescorting.co.uk/sex-worker-safety-guide.php. While the industry is historically dominated by women, there are many men entering into the escort and prostitution business as well.
Some examples of reducing risk include keeping a charged cell phone on you at all times, working in pairs, and knowing who your clients are.
The guide also advises sex trade workers to get regular physical check ups, including a hepatitis shot.
