In an article published by on January 6th titled “Olive oil: Nature’s answer to dieting,” the use of olive oil to reduce the risk of diabetes and obesity is discussed. The article states that olive oil “can reduce the risk of developing diabetes even among people who neither cut back on calories nor increase their exercise.” Researchers in Spain conducting a study on the effects of olive oil on diabetes and obesity have concluded that improving one’s diet and incorporating regular exercise is a more effective way to ward off diabetes than preventative medicines.

The study observed 3,451 older men and women who were at risk for cardiovascular disease. Some participants in the group were put on a control diet, and others on a Mediterranean diet supplemented with three tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil per day. The article says, “The magic elixir seems to be olive oil: Research subjects who stuck to the Mediterranean diet supplemented by an additional three tablespoons of olive oil a day had the best chance of avoiding diabetes.”
