ABC Family's The Fosters' Hayden Byerly Discusses Social Movement “Blue for Jude” & Inspiring Other Kids on Maria Menounos' AfterBuzz TV Network
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) January 14, 2014 -- Hayden Byerly, who's acted on shows such as NBC's Parenthood and most recently ABC Family's The Fosters, appeared on Extra host Maria Menounos' “aftershow” network, AfterBuzz TV, where he was interviewed by hosts Jillian Leff, Jeffrey Masters and Stephanie Giorgi as part of the network's The Fosters aftershow. During the interview, Byerly discussed the social movement “Blue for Jude” and inspiring other kids.
Back in episode 5 of the show, “The Morning After”, Byerly's character Jude makes a new friend named Connor. They remain friends on the show until Jude wears blue nail polish to school, causing him to get bullied. Connor returns with his nails also painted blue and he and Jude remain friends. This storyline caused a social movement that became known as “Blue for Jude”. In speaking about the movement, Byerly says, “I had a feeling people would like [the scenes], but I had no idea that it would go as far as it did. It just blew up. People were so excited by it...I got so many pictures that night. I was looking at them all and I was staying up for hours just looking at these pictures, these friendly tweets. It was so touching and it was amazing to hear all these different tweets.”
Later in the interview, Byerly talks about wanting to inspire other kids. He says, “I hope that some of the kids out there who are different and are special definitely embrace that. I hope that watching the Fosters they feel more comfortable about that. It's hard to be different. It's not easy.”
Given the show's name, production wanted to education their actor on foster children. They even brought them on set. Byerly says, “We got to talk to [the foster kids], hang out for a whole day, have lunch with them. I also went to see a movie called Short Term 12, which was a a fantastic movie about foster children and what happens when they are in a group home, what happens to them when they're in the foster system. It was a very powerful movie, a very touching movie. So we have seen a lot of foster kids and I have gotten tweets and letters from foster kids, which has been awesome. I love reading their stories. It makes me smile and sometimes makes me cry whenever I hear these stories.”
