A joint effort spearheaded and led by Deanna Smith of Deanna’s Gluten Free, including local dietitians, gastroenterologists, individuals from support groups, and businesses, is announcing a highly educational weekend Gluten-Free Wellness Retreat March 7-9 at the 5 Star Aviara Resort in Carlsbad, CA. The skills presented are especially important to those with celiac disease because a very strict gluten-free diet is the only treatment for this common disease; however it is highly beneficial for anyone who needs to lead a gluten-free life.

Renowned expert celiac dietitian Melinda Dennis will provide this intensive and restorative nutrition training designed for living with gluten-related disorders. Individuals with celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity, their family members, friends, chefs, dietitians/students, and other clinicians are invited to attend to learn to navigate a gluten-free diet, while maximizing their health and nutrition.

The Gluten-Free Wellness Retreat has a limited number of spaces. "It is an honor and a rare privilege to bring one of the nation’s leading expert celiac dietitians, Melinda Dennis, to San Diego to share her wealth of specialized gluten-free information. I know all who attend will gain the knowledge to live a healthier life,” said Deanna Smith. Founded in 2008, Deanna’s Gluten-Free is the local leader in gluten-free baking. Her company offers a wide range of healthy, truly natural gluten-free products and services designed to support, empower and educate the American population. Profits from the event will benefit Julie & Deanna’s Kid Start Wellness Foundation, a San Diego based non-profit support group for children with celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity.

Regular counseling with a skilled celiac dietitian is considered key to ensuring the best management of celiac disease; however dietitians with this specialized training are hard to find. Gastroenterologists Sheila Crowe, MD, Director of the Adult Celiac Disease Clinic at UC San Diego Health System, and Kimberly Newton, MD, Director of the Pediatric Celiac Clinic at Rady Children’s Hospital, San Diego, will separately be guest speakers at two different training events that weekend.
