Bail was denied yesterday to Curtis reeves for his shooting of another man in a Tampa, Florida movie theater. Reeves, 71, is charged with second-degree murder and could be face life in prison, CNN.com reports.
Before a matinee showing of “Lone Survivor” on Monday, Reeves, a retired police officer, got into an argument with Chad Oulsen, another theatergoer who was texting someone on his phone. After their initial exchange, Reeves left the theater to inform a theater employee of Oulsen’s texting. When he was unable to get an employee’s attention, Reeves returned to the theater the argument continued.
Reeves recounts feeling something hit his face. Witnesses say that it was Oulsen throwing a bag of popcorn at him. In response, Reeves drew a .380 caliber handgun and shot Oulsen in the chest. Time reports that the bullet also struck Oulsen’s wife in the hand as she tried to grab her husband. Reeves then sat down and did not attempt to flee. An off-duty deputy was sitting nearby in the theater and rushed over to confiscate Reeves’ pistol. Reeves wastaken into custody. Oulsen died in the hospital later Monday evening.
In the initial hearing, Reevesclaimed to have been defending himself when he fired, sinceOulsen had thrown an unknown object at him. The judge ruled against this claim and denied bail. Reeves remains in jail, charged with second-degree murder. He could now face life in prison.
