Metal meshes - previously not under serious consideration as transparent conductors because of their lack of transparency - have now overcome their limitations and are seen as serious competition for ITO in touch-screen sensors and large display, lighting and solar panels. In some cases, ITO and metal meshes may even be used to together.
Metal meshes on film have been around for many years, but it is only in the past couple of years that new deposition and materials technologies have allowed meshes to serve as a transparent conductor for real world applications. Many of the new generation of metal meshes use silver, but some now use copper, which had previously mostly been ruled out for transparent conductor markets.
