Top Talent in Clinical Informatics Named as Prize Finalists

AMIA Provider Innovation in Informatics (Pi²) Award, sponsored by SSi-SEARCH, honors leaders for demonstrated clinical informatics innovation.

To honor the physicians and nurses who are pioneering ways to bring informatics out of academia and into healthcare delivery, the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) has selected four groups of physician and nurse leaders as finalists in the AMIA Provider Innovation in Informatics (Pi2) Award.

The finalist team leaders and entries, selected by the Provider Members on the iHealth Conference Program Planning Team, include:

  •     Troy McGuire, MD, Seattle Children’s Hospital (SCH) in Seattle, WA: “NEDOCS (National Emergency Department Over Crowding Score)”
  •     Emily C. Webber, MD, Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, IN: “Pediatric Venous Thrombus Embolus (VTE) Screening and Prophylaxis Tool”
  •     Ming-Chuan Jessie Kuo, RN, MS, Cathay General Hospital in Taipei, Taiwan/ROC: “Seamless Total Safety: Mobile Intelligent Chemotherapy Medication Administration”
  •     David Douglas, MD, Northwest Innovation Center in Portland, OR: “Unsuspected Radiologic Findings Registry”

“These finalists exemplify the type of leadership we need to transform healthcare through clinical informatics,” said Ross D. Martin, MD, MHA, AMIA’s Vice President of Policy and Development. “As increasing numbers of clinical informaticians are trained and move from academia to healthcare delivery settings, we are seeing more innovation occurring on the front lines. Clinical informatics leaders are the ones who are bringing these innovations into healthcare delivery, where they can impact patients.”

AMIA partnered with SSi-SEARCH to establish the award, which will be presented on Jan. 31 in Orlando at the iHealth 2014 conference. All finalist team leaders have received an invitation to participate in a pre-conference workshop and free registration to the meeting. In addition to the recognition and bragging rights, the winning team will receive a monthly delivery of their favorite pie for a year, a play on the name of the award, in appreciation of the true team effort required for innovation.

“Beyond honoring the teams that are using innovative, technological solutions to make a real impact on patient care, this award also encourages the dissemination of best practices,” said Pamela Dixon, Managing Partner of SSi-SEARCH. “Technology is a primary lever of change in healthcare. These teams are prime examples of the thinking and drive that continues to make a positive impact on healthcare.”

Leaders in healthcare such as physicians, nurses and hospital administrators are making important strides in using clinical informatics technologies and analytics methods such as electronic health records (EHRs), natural language processing and data analysis algorithms to improve healthcare delivery within their systems. Continued application of clinical informatics solutions has the potential to improve population health, individual healthcare experiences and cost effectiveness.

“We’re pleased with the innovative and inspiring nominations that we’ve received,” Martin said. “We had trouble choosing between the many quality submissions we received, but that’s a wonderful problem to have.”
