Corte Madera, CA (PRWEB) January 22, 2014 -- Medical Center of Marin was the sponsor of a comprehensive community outreach event at the Whistlestop Active Aging Center in San Rafael on January 11, 2014. The main attraction of the event was the flu shot give-away which came at just the right time for Marin County residents. Medical Center of Marin (MCoM) gave away 70 flu shots to needy individuals, about 30% were given to children and 20% to adults over 50 years of age. The County of Marin Department of Health and Human Services and the Service Employees International Union-United Healthcare Workers also joined in their effort by providing ten Certified Enrollment Counselors (CECs) who assisted and advised 62 people with respect to signing up for health coverage. Of the 62 individuals that met with CECs, 41 were actually enrolled in either The Affordable Care Act or Medi-Cal, depending upon their financial situation.
Whistlestop Active Aging Center at 930 Tamalpais Avenue in San Rafael donated the entire building for this one-day event. The outreach project began December 1st as a One Warm Coat drive, which took place in the Whole Foods markets in Marin and collected 235 coats, 175 of which were given to attendees of the Unify event. The remaining 60 coats were donated to Good Will. Whole Foods markets generously donated 100 bags of groceries which were passed out to the needy families and 188 donated books were also given away.
