New York Motor Vehicle Accident Lawyer Adnan Munawar Lauds Mayor De Blasio’s Commitment to Curbing Pedestrian Traffic Deaths
New York, NY (PRWEB) January 28, 2014 -- Mayor Bill De Blasio publicly promised to fight what he called an “epidemic” of pedestrian deaths this past Wednesday the New York Times news reported. (De Blasio Announces Steps to Reduce Traffic Deaths, Jan 15, 2014).
According to the report, Mayor De Blasio was speaking in front of family members of New Yorkers who had been killed in traffic accidents as he rolled out his plan to create “slow” zones, prioritize going after drivers who speed or fail to yield to pedestrians, install speed cameras, and increase the number of accidents that police investigate. The NYPD will now investigate any crash in which someone is killed or seriously injured, whereas before they only investigate accidents in which someone was considered likely to die. The police have also created a special collision investigation squad and potentially increase the number of arrests of drivers who are involved in deadly crashes.
According to the report, 173 of the 286 people who were killed in traffic accidents last year were pedestrians. This year, eleven New Yorkers have already been killed in motor vehicle accidents. In addition to the preventative measures the mayor laid out, he also announced the formation of a panel that includes the NYPD, the Department of Transportation, the Heath Department, and the Taxi and Limousine Commission that would report back to him on further suggestions next month. At this point, six speed cameras have been installed around the city, with a total of twenty such cameras, all of them near schools.
“It is reassuring to see Mayor De Blasio take the issue of pedestrian deaths seriously and pledge to action to make New York a safer place for everyone,” said Adnan Munawar, Partner at Munawar & Andrews-Santillo LLP. “So many of the deaths and serious injuries that occur due to motor vehicle accidents every year are preventable and hopefully these changes will get drivers to slow down and be more aware of other people on the road. Drivers in New York should be on notice: the police are making traffic safety a priority and cracking down on people who operate their vehicles recklessly. ”
“While I am encouraged by Mayor De Blasio’s action plan and have confidence it can reduce pedestrian deaths in the city, it will likely be impossible to eliminate fatal car accidents altogether.
