Tentmakers of Cairo Return to United States for AQS QuiltWeek® – Phoenix, Arizona 2014
Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) January 21, 2014 -- The American Quilter’s Society is pleased to present the debut of Stitch Like an Egyptian at AQS QuiltWeek® – Phoenix, Arizona 2014 from February 5 to 8, 2014. Counted among the most celebrated fiber artists of this decade, the Tentmakers of Cairo return to the United States with 130 pieces of appliqué artistry. Each piece is handmade in Cairo, Egypt, specifically for exhibition in the United States and will be available for purchase at the event.
All 130 works on display are masterfully designed and crafted, showing the breadth of design and composition that typify this uniquely Egyptian art form. Egyptian tentmakers are famous for stunning designs and use of color in appliqué on canvas-backed cotton backgrounds, forming multiple layers of design and dimension. Made entirely by hand on a single street in Cairo, these appliqué designs make bold statements in home décor as conversation pieces or wallhangings.
Tentmakers Tarek Abdelhay and Hosam Hanafy will be onsite meeting and chatting with visitors, all while stitching new pieces at lightning speed. Excitement saturates the exhibit as Tarek and Hosam radiate warmth, welcoming visitors to fully immerse themselves in the experience. Thousands come to see the jaw-dropping art work. Many spend hours watching the men work and others come to purchase these unparalleled pieces for their collections. The sale of the Egyptian artwork begins as the doors open at 9 a.m. on February 5th.
At home in Egypt, the Tentmakers of Cairo are viewed more as craftsmen than fiber artists and go unnoticed by many in Cairo. American audiences, however, appreciate the skill, intricacy, and artistry of their work, and are absolutely thrilled to learn from them. At AQS QuiltWeek® events, the Tentmakers of Cairo experience the respect and appreciation due artists of their caliber.
Admission to Stitch Like an Egyptian is included with admission to AQS QuiltWeek®. Hours are Wednesday, February 5–Friday, February 7 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, February 8 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Phoenix Convention Center.
