The Eichholz Law Firm Commends Port Royal on Banning Texting and Driving

Port Royal is taking a big step in improving public safety by banning texting and driving.

PORT ROYAL, S.C. (PRWEB) January 22, 2014

The attorneys at The Eichholz Law Firm would like to commend the Port Royal Council on officially banning texting and driving. The ban also extends to actions like manually typing information onto a handheld device while operating a motor vehicle.

“Port Royal is taking a big step in improving public safety by banning texting and driving.” said car accident lawyer David Eichholz of The Eichholz Law Firm. “Texting and driving is responsible for 18 percent of all fatal car accident in the United States. We hope that soon enough the state will realize just how dangerous this habit is and move forward with banning texting and driving,” he said.

First time offenders in Port Royal will be issued warning tickets for texting and driving beginning Feb. 8.

According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety Traffic Collision Fact Book 2009, there were 90 car collisions caused by cellphone use. Since 2007 the number of collisions caused by cellphones has decreased as ordinances continue to be passed, however, South Carolina is still one of eight states that has not enacted a statewide texting and driving ban.

In September 2013 Beaufort County enacted a county-wide ban and has since issued 24 warnings although no tickets were issued. The city of Beaufort reports that 35 tickets have been issued since their ordinance passed in November 2012.
