The Open Invention Network plays an absolutely fundamental role in securing freedom for all of us in open source to innovate by providing patent protection against patents and patent trolls

Edinburgh (PRWEB UK) 23 January 2014

For those unfamiliar with the OIN, it plays an absolutely fundamental role in securing freedom for all of us in open source to innovate, by providing patent protection against patents and patent trolls, particularly for Linux. OIN is supported by Google, IBM, NEC, Philips, Red Hat, Sony and SUSE.

Keith operates right at the heart of open source. As an ex-career diplomat, his diplomacy skills have been brought to bear on numerous occasions to the benefit of open source.

He is directly responsible for enabling, influencing and defending the integrity of the Linux ecosystem. Central to the achievement of his goals is the acquisition and transfer of patent rights designed to permit members of the Linux ecosystem to operate free of the threat of assertion and litigation from those whose business models are hostile to open source.

Keith is a frequent speaker on corporate strategy, finance and intellectual property management.

The Open Source Awards are being held in Edinburgh on Wednesday 26th February. There are three awards:

1. Person
2. Organisation
3. Student (£500 cash prize)

Nominations are still open. For more information or to register for this free event, go to the awards website at

We're expecting a lively evening with some of the best minds in software engineering and open source. Food and drink will be provided and great networking opportunities will be abundant.

Greg Soper, CEO of open source CRM consultancy SalesAgility who are organising the Awards, said: “We aimed high and hit the jackpot. Without the absolutely critical work done by the OIN, Open Source as we know it today would not exist and with Keith we have an evening with one of open Source's heaviest hitters.”

The Open Source Awards is sponsored by CGI.

SalesAgility is an open source SugarCRM software development and consulting practice based in Stirling and Manchester. We design and deliver SugarCRM projects internationally and have clients in USA, China, France, Germany, Australia, Iceland and the UK.
