NBC’s popular sitcom Parks and Recreation takes place in the town of Pawnee, Indiana—and while Pawnee itself may be a work of fiction, the show regularly incorporates real-life pieces of local Indiana flavor. This week’s episode of the show will offer a gentle parody of the Hoosier State’s farmers market scene—and Indianapolis’ own Artisano’s Oils & Spices will play a key role in some of the footage.
“The production designers of Parks and Recreation wanted to really capture the true vibe and spirit of Indiana farmers markets, so they asked a number of local shops and vendors to send in some of their materials, including banners, signage, and sample products,” comments David Burcham, owner of Artisano’s. “We submitted some materials from our store and were told at the time that they may or may not make it onto television. Now we are delighted to report that Artisano’s will have a strong visible presence in the episode.”
Though the episode was shot in California, it does incorporate many details that are true to actual Indiana farmers markets—including prominent features of Burcham’s Artisano’s banner, logo, and even a few products.
“We think this is a great way for the show to celebrate a true Indiana institution,” Burcham notes. “We are not just proud of our own small role here, but also happy to see that the great Indiana farmers market is getting its time in the spotlight. The farmers market is not just an important Indiana tradition, but an important Artisano’s tradition, as well.”
Indeed, Burcham and his team are heavily involved in local farmers markets, setting up shop at multiple venues during the summer farmers market season. Even now, during the winter months, Artisano’s has a presence at a couple of local farmers markets, currently focusing on the Indy Winter Farmers Market in Downtown Indianapolis.
Artisano’s Oils & Spices is a staple for Indianapolis foodies, offering an array of savory ingredients from around the world.
Parks and Recreation airs on NBC Thursdays at 8:30/7:30c; the farmers market-themed episode, featuring Artisano’s, is scheduled to air this week, on January 23.
Artisano’s Oils & Spices features an array of unique and exotic oils, vinegars, salts, spices, and peppers from around the world. In addition, the store features delicious pasta, bread and other gifts for chefs and food enthusiasts alike. Artisano’s believes that great food does not have to be expensive or made by people who have extensive culinary backgrounds; it just needs the very finest ingredients. The staff at Artisano’s gives you the opportunity to taste before you buy and provides you with knowledge from industry experts and personal chefs to help you make the most of your culinary experience.
The idea for Artisano’s Oils & Spices began with owner David Burcham’s own passion for food and love of travel. His goal is to bring the exotic flavors he has experienced all over the world to his native city of Indianapolis.
