The Turnaround is used many styles of music. The Blues Turnaround or V, VI, I (5-4-1) Turnaround came from the Ragtime Blues era. The cadence of the Blues Turnaround is backwards from traditional western music. The job of the Blues Turnaround is to show the listener where the chord progression ends and starts over, it does this by ending on the V (five) of the chord progression making it want to resolve back to the I (one).

“This is a great blues turnaround that you are going to want to add to your arsenal of blues licks,” says MacLennan, “the turnaround is such an important phrase to have a number of variations too.” Jon demonstrates the lick as follows; he first plays the open 6th string twice and then plays the 6th fret of the 4th string with his first finger and then the 7th fret of the 5th string with his 2nd finger and then back to the 4th string 6th fret followed by the 7th fret with his 2nd finger and immediately he does a pull-off back to the 6th fret. Then he picks the 7th fret of the 4th string again and then plays the 8th fret with his 3rd finger and immediately does a pull-off back to the 7th fret, then he plays the 8th fret again and follows that by the picking 9th fret with his 4th finger. Jon recommends practicing this in multiple keys as an exercise. Guitar TAB’s are available for this lesson at BluesGuitar.com.
