Passive House Skylights Now Available in the US

Brooklyn-based 475 High Performance Building Supply to stock Lamilux skylights – the first such high quality skylight available in the US.

The allure of skylights is natural. They boost available sunlight, ventilation, and value for the buildings that include them. But, ask a homeowner who has lived with one and you are likely to hear tales of air and water leaks, and discomfort caused by overheating in summer and drafts in winter.

Lamilux, a European window manufacturer located in the Bavarian region of Germany, looks to change the way Americans think about skylights. Partnering with Brooklyn-based startup 475 High Performance Building Supply, these highly insulated, air sealed, and thermal bridge free flatroof glazing systems are now stocked and available in the US.

Efficiency of the Lamilux FE Energysave model made it the first to achieve class A certification from the Passive House Institute of Germany, creators of the Passive House building standard – a certification which demands some of the most rigorous glazing performance standards in the world. Lamilux skylights utilize triple-pane, low heat gain glass connected by spacers that insulate from both noise and heat.

“The Lamilux skylights give us a new level of performance that we just haven’t seen before,” said Jeremy Shannon, CEO of Build with Prospect, Inc, a firm that specializes in Passive House building retrofits in New York and was among the first to install Lamilux skylights in the United States. “Glazing is a critical part of Passive House design. As an architect, I can’t risk installing a skylight that hurts the building’s thermal envelope or that causes my clients problems down the line.”
