The popular NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation is set in the fictional town of Pawnee, Indiana, and the show has a long history of gently ribbing the state’s values and traditions—such as the widespread enthusiasm for basketball, for example. The most recent episode of the series turned its attention to another Indiana institution, the farmers market—and in doing so, it gave local store Artisano’s Oils & Spices a chance to shine.
For the farmers market-themed episode, which aired on January 23 in prime time, the Parks and Recreation crew enlisted the help of many local food vendors, asking them to submit their signage and sample products for use on the show. Artisano’s was one of the Indiana companies to pitch in, and it paid off handsomely, in the form of a prominent feature on the show. Though the episode was filmed in Hollywood—not on location at an actual Indiana farmers market—there is a large Artisano’s banner that is displayed prominently throughout the episode, giving nationwide attention to the company’s logo.
“Farmers markets are indeed important to us, so we got a kick out of the show’s treatment of this Indiana tradition,” comments David Burcham, the owner of Artisano’s Oils & Spices. “More than that, though, we are really excited about this incredible exposure for our brand, and we are grateful to the show for inviting us to participate and for so generously making use of our materials.”
Artisano’s Oils & Spices provides high-quality ingredients—ranging from balsamic vinegars to bourbon glazes, from popcorn seasonings to olive oils—that come from all around the world. The store is located in Indianapolis, but does have a major presence at local farmers markets. Burcham notes that Artisano’s is currently involved in the winter farmers market in downtown Indianapolis, and that the store maintains a presence at more than half a dozen area farmers markets during the spring and summer seasons.
“Needless to say, we are always honored to have our name associated with the great farmers market tradition, even when it’s in a playful way, like on Parks and Recreation,” Burcham concludes.
Artisano’s Oils & Spices features an array of unique and exotic oils, vinegars, salts, spices, and peppers from around the world. In addition, the store features delicious pasta, bread and other gifts for chefs and food enthusiasts alike. Artisano’s believes that great food does not have to be expensive or made by people who have extensive culinary backgrounds; it just needs the very finest ingredients. The staff at Artisano’s gives you the opportunity to taste before you buy and provides you with knowledge from industry experts and personal chefs to help you make the most of your culinary experience.
The idea for Artisano’s Oils & Spices began with owner David Burcham’s own passion for food and love of travel. His goal is to bring the exotic flavors he has experienced all over the world to his native city of Indianapolis.
