As an affiliated member of the Search Engine Academy, Ross Barefoot has been teaching SEO workshops in Colorado and Utah since 2011. His company, the Rocky Mountain Search Engine Academy (RMSEA) was founded to help web developers, Internet marketers, and business people navigate the turbulent waters of search marketing.

Although the RMSEA remains committed to hands on workshops, they have also embraced the role of distance learning as a necessary component in educating their students.

"The ideal for some people is hands on instruction in a workshop-based setting, but for other people the idea is a self-guided study program that doesn't require travel and offers maximum flexibility for busy schedules," explains Barefoot. "We aim to accommodate both groups of people and help the to understand what search engine optimization means for their organizations and their careers," he continued.

The company chose, an online learning platform, to host its first online education program. The course, titled "Real World SEO, Essentials," is available on Udemy for $87.

According to the company's website,, the new offering "is designed to penetrate theory and hone in on practice. It was created for busy business and marketing people who need to know the most important things to do right now to improve the performance of their website in search engine results."

Real World SEO, Essentials is divided into 9 sections, covering topics such as Search Engine Fundamentals, Evaluating Your Website, and Optimizing for Conversion, and consists of almost 5 hours of instructional material divided into 106 lectures. It also encourages students to perform a "homework" assignment at the end of each of the 9 sections, claiming that it will help businesses end the class with their SEO efforts already underway.
