Ken Burroughs, Vice President, Corporate Strategy at UPS Freight, was recently named chairman of the SMC³ Board of Directors, succeeding Rob Estes of Estes Freight Lines. He assumed his duties as chairman at SMC³’s Jump Start conference in Atlanta, Jan. 20-22.
In announcing the new chairman, SMC³ President and CEO Jack Middleton said, “I have had the privilege of knowing Ken for several years and learning firsthand the depth of his character and industry knowledge. He is truly one of the heavy hitters in this business and brings tremendous respect to his role as chairman. I am certain SMC³ will benefit from his leadership.”
Burroughs, who has served on the board of SMC³ for more than a decade, brings a wealth of motor freight experience to his new, two-year commitment as chairman. His career in transportation spans nearly 42 years, including the last 18 with UPS Freight, one of the nation’s largest less-than-truckload carriers and a leading truckload service provider. Burroughs’ extensive industry background has included positions in sales, operations, finance, customer service and pricing. He most recently served UPS Freight as Vice President, Revenue Management from 1996-2013, and is a member and former board member of the National Motor Freight Traffic Association.
“As a member of the SMC³ Board of Directors, I have been associated with some of the best leaders in our industry,” Burroughs said. “I appreciate the diversity of opinions and perspectives, but also the way we reach a consensus. Under Jack Middleton’s leadership and direction, and with help from the board, SMC³ has grown into the industry’s premier technology and educational leader nationwide. To have contributed to that growth has been truly gratifying.”
A resident of Richmond, Va., Burroughs volunteers with several local charities, including United Way, Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels.
