Projects which overrun or are not completed within budget can cost organisations millions of pounds each year.

It has been reported by UTV on December 10 in the article ‘Auditors Criticise Sports Project Errors’ that sports facilities at St Colman’s College in Newry, Northern Ireland were refurbished and made available to the community, yet the underestimation of costs has caused auditors to criticise mistakes allegedly made during the project. The audit report found that plans to install a specialist surface at the high jump facility fell through and were then reinstated, causing costs to increase ten times higher than anticipated at the beginning of the project. The specialist surface, known as synthetic D, was replaced with grass but subsequent changes to the plan cost the project £113,000. Auditors also discovered that these additional changes had not been included in the revised business plan. Furthermore, it’s reported that Sport NI, who is responsible for the project, did not inform the Department for Culture, Arts, and Leisure or other relevant bodies of the changes to the project.
According to UTV, the report stated that:
“Project management and oversight arrangements were poor.”
As specialists in project management training, the experts at ILX were concerned by this recent news and a representative for the company offered their comments:
“Projects which overrun or are not completed within budget can cost organisations millions of pounds each year. Adopting a project management methodology such as PRINCE2® within an organisation will help you recognise who should be involved in a project, what they will be responsible for, and importantly gives you a set of processes to work through. However adopting a project management method alone will not make a project successful, this recent story highlights how important skilled Project Managers are to ensuring a project delivers on time and in budget. The capability of a Project Manager is directly related to the success of a project so ensuring that that those involved have the right knowledge and skills is vital.”
