Indian Environment Network to Support EPEAT Expansion in India
Portland, OR (PRWEB) March 12, 2014 -- The Green Electronics Council today announced that the Indian Environment Network (IEN), an online community of professionals from more than 2,000 organizations and institutions, has committed to be an EPEAT® Champion. EPEAT is the definitive global rating system for greener electronics. As the system expands to cover India, IEN will promote EPEAT among its member professionals and organizations as a way for them to identify and select environmentally preferable computers, monitors, imaging equipment and televisions.
“EPEAT can help Indian purchasers to procure greener electronics that save on energy costs and reduce the carbon footprint of Indian business on the planet,” said Chandra Kishore, Indian Environment Network founder. “IEN is committed to sharing cutting edge knowledge and information about environmentally preferable products and services with organizations across the world so that our members can make the right choice.”
In January 2014, India became the 43rd country covered by the EPEAT system. Manufacturers have already begun the process of qualifying their products for EPEAT in India. Purchasers will be able to review the electronics registered in India in the system’s publicly searchable database during the second quarter of 2014.
EPEAT, which stands for “Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool,” rates products on a lifecycle basis. The system addresses the elimination of toxic substances, the use of recycled and recyclable materials, product design for recycling, product longevity, energy efficiency, corporate performance and packaging attributes. Manufacturers register their products in EPEAT on a country-by-country basis to ensure all product and service criteria are supported and verified for local markets.
In 2013, Indian purchasers spent $9.5 billion on computing hardware alone. Replacing products that do not meet EPEAT’s stringent environmental criteria with high performing products that meet dozens of the system’s environmental performance criteria could contribute to major reductions in organizations’ electricity usage, and by making recycling easier, could help address e-waste issues as well.
As one of its first activities as an EPEAT Champion, IEN hosted an informative webinar about the EPEAT system and “How to Purchase Green Electronics.” The webinar has already been viewed more than 4,500 times by IEN members from India to South Korea and from South Africa to the United Kingdom. IEN will continue to work with the Green Electronics Council on activities to promote the EPEAT system in India and by Indian environment professionals worldwide.
