By providing an option to leave at any time, we're giving our members the freedom and power that they deserve

Santa Monica-based multi-channel network, ScaleLab, has become the first YouTube MCN to permanently abolish 'lock-in' contracts. The result is that all YouTube creators in ScaleLab's MCN may come and go as they please.

The current industry standard for YouTube channels who join a multi-channel network is a 1 to 3 year exclusive term. In the event that a YouTube channel owner is not happy with how an MCN is performing, there is usually no means to end the contract early. ScaleLab's "Freedom Provision", as the company calls it, changes that by giving channels the ability to cancel their contract at any time.

"By providing an option to leave at any time, we're giving our members the freedom and power that they deserve," according to ScaleLab's President and Co-Founder, Maximilien Desmarais. "We've spoken to literally hundreds of frustrated creators who feel trapped in their MCN contracts. That’s just wrong. If an MCN isn't performing, the channel owner should be able to pursue other options."

ScaleLab is a mid-sized MCN, with just under 1,000 YouTube channels in its network. It represents artists such as magician Rich Ferguson, Jared McMullen (Friday Night Cranks) and photography guru Karl Taylor.

ScaleLab has developed a reputation as a hands-on, creator-first MCN, with a staff of 20 ScaleLab Technicians (self-described "geekiest humans on the planet") who go to extreme lengths to help their channel members.

According to Rich Ferguson, a magician/prankster who recently appeared on Ellen, The Tonight Show and Good Morning America, "I never thought I'd join an MCN until I met ScaleLab. I love that I can leave with no strings attached. Incidentally, my channel's growing faster than ever, so I'm not going anywhere."
