Obstetrics & Gynecology (OB/GYN) are medical specialties that deal with the female reproductive organs. Obstetrics deals with pregnancy and Gynecology deals with non pregnant females. Significant advances have been made in both fields of female reproductive care, including decreasing cancer rates and deaths, and increasing fertility in infertile patients. In the past few years alone, the FDA has approved the vaccine Gardasil, to prevent cervical cancer caused by HPV. This discovery that HPV could cause cancer, and the vaccine has reduced cervical cancer risks for women and teenagers across the country. Breast cancer and ovarian cancer death rates have also reduced significantly in the past decade.
Jimmy Johnson's "Leading Edge" program will feature an upcoming segment that will be discussing the advances in Obstetrics & Gynecology, and what it means to women today. From advances in cancer treatments, to new fertility drugs and procedures Obstetrics & Gynecology is a specialty where exciting new discoveries are still being made about the female reproductive system.
