The ECRI Institute recently released its 2014 Top 10 Health Technology Hazards list, with inadequate reprocessing of endoscopes and surgical instruments named as the sixth most-serious health technology hazard this year.
This health hazard is especially prevalent recently, with Seattle Children’s Hospital and Swedish Medical Center exposing dozens of patients to HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C within one month of each other because of “human errors” in the decontamination process.
“With the advancement in medical technology over the years, it just doesn’t make sense that these health hazards still exist,” said Brock Remy, director of operations at SurgiMark. “In light of the two Seattle hospital mistakes, it is clear now that lack of proper cleaning is a hospital-wide issue; therefore, it’s imperative to push the use of disposable medical supplies when available.”
This hazard has affected hospitals for some time, with a 2011 Center for Public Integrity case study finding 350 “surgery-ready” suction tips that were actually contaminated with blood, tissue, bone and rust. These reusable suction tips were all cleaned per the manufacturers’ instructions and were deemed ready for the operating room.
“All reusable suction tips and Poole handles should have been replaced by disposables years ago, but most manufacturers have not been able to design disposable suction tips that excel in performance and design,” said Remy.
Insufficient sterilization has always been the driving factor in the development of SurgiMark’s Yankauer suction devices. Its high-performance Via-Guard Yankauer suction tips are disposable, eliminating the risks of healthcare-associated bacteria that can lead to surgical site infections (SSIs) and even death.
