Sommers Schwartz Attorneys Rank High Among Michigan’s Top Verdicts, Settlements & Judgments for 2013
Southfield, MI (PRWEB) February 05, 2014 -- Michigan Lawyers Weekly has published its “Million-Dollar Verdicts & Settlements” list for 2013, a compilation of Michigan case results of at least $1 million based on submissions from the attorneys involved in those matters. [Vol. 28, No. 13, January 27, 2014]. Similar to prior years, Sommers Schwartz, P.C. is among the most frequently mentioned law firms, claiming five of the top spots.
Unlike other firms, however, Sommers Schwartz is the only firm on Michigan Lawyers Weekly’s list with reported results in three different practice areas – medical malpractice, commercial litigation, and class actions:
- Jason Thompson obtained a $5.25 million judgment – the largest class action result in Michigan in 2013 – against an industrial products distributor and its president over claims that they sent more than 10,000 fax advertisements to potential customers without permission, a violation of the federal Telephone Consumer Protection Act.
- Matthew Curtis and Richard Groffsky reached a $3.5 million settlement in a medical malpractice case over a birth injury caused by an improper delay in delivery despite fetal heart monitor tracings that demonstrated deterioration in the fetal condition, resulting in permanent brain injury and motor deficiency.
- Samuel Meklir won a $2.8 million verdict in a medical malpractice case involving a wrongful death caused by a two and one-half day delay in treating a patient’s myocardial infarction-induced arrhythmia.
- In another birth trauma matter, Matthew Curtis and Richard Fox negotiated a $2.45 million settlement over allegations that signs of fetal hypotension and bradycardia were not timely addressed, causing in the child’s cerebral palsy with related quadriparesis with significant mental, motor, and language delays.
- Andrew Kochanowski secured a $2 million verdict in a case of corporate espionage and silent fraud brought by entrepreneur Malcolm Bricklin against a U.S. engineer who was found to have shared confidential information and strategy to China’s Chery Automobile Co.
“The results our attorneys achieved in these diverse matters show our dedication and commitment to the clients who trust us to fight on their behalf,” said Joseph H. Bourgon, CEO and Senior Shareholder with Sommers Schwartz. “The fact that these results span a number of different practice areas is testament to the breadth of our talent.”
