Maponics, a leading provider of geospatial data, analyzed five of their datasets to develop a list of the Top 10 Most Affordable Neighborhoods with the Best Schools.

“Homes are typically more expensive in neighborhoods with highly ranked public schools,” said Paul Gallagher, VP of Marketing and Product. “We wanted to find family-friendly ‘pockets’ where home buyers don’t need to sacrifice the right house for a great school, or settle for a struggling school just because they want a home with more amenities.”

In each of the country’s top 10 metro regions, Maponics identified the best neighborhood for families from the perspective of housing, public education and crime. Results are in the table available here.

Maponics based their list on the top 10 U.S. metros by population (excluding New York City because it has school choice). They then mapped school attendance zones to the neighborhoods in each city using their Neighborhood Boundaries and School Boundaries products.

Maponics used Context Real Estate Sales to deliver median home prices. To determine affordability, they used Census data and Realtor.com’s affordability calculator.

A public high school was considered “high ranking” if it falls within the state’s 70th percentile based on Maponics Context School Rankings.

Maponics used Context Crime Scores to rank the overall crime levels of each neighborhood, with 1 being Very Low and 10 being Very High.

“The list is an example of how to filter data and isolate truly useful information for consumers,” said Gallagher. “We hope consumers and real estate professionals will refer to this list during the home buying process, or take the ideas behind the ranking to shape their property search in any metro region nationwide.”
