When a co-worker and her family lost everything in a house fire, it was about more than just the power of technology and social media to raise awareness and needed funds, but about how the company came together to help those in need, and bring hope back to a family that was left feeling hopeless.

On January 21, 2014, it was the power of social media marketing that helped make a crowd-funding campaign for one of their own a complete success.

A social media status update alerted Jennifer Nottage to the tragedy that had fallen on co-worker Kayla Luongo. Overnight, the home that Luongo and her family lived in had suffered a serious fire. Photos of the damage showed the immense loss and Nottage sprung to action.

Using a crowd-funding site, Gofundme.com, Nottage set a fundraising goal for Kayla and her family and shared the story and the link on social media. Within 24 hours, nearly $2,000 was raised within the Astonish community as a result of social media networking and open hearts. “We lost about 80% of our stuff,” Luongo told NBC 10 in an interview days after the news of the fire, and subsequent campaign, took off in the community.

One week later, the fundraising goal of $3,000 was reached as a result of an outpouring of support. The campaign saw over 200 shares on social media, a true demonstration of the impact of social media networking.
