St. Baldrick’s Foundation Event to Raise Money for Lifesaving Research
Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) February 04, 2014 -- The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer-driven charity dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research, will host one of its signature head-shaving events at Tim Finnegan’s Restaurant & Pub in Phoenix, Arizona, on Saturday, March 8, 2014, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., where volunteers from MiniCo and other local businesses including OpenTech Alliance and the U-Haul Self Storage Affiliate Network will shave their heads in solidarity with kids with cancer and raise money to Conquer Childhood Cancers!
Why all the shaved heads? Worldwide, a child is diagnosed with cancer every three minutes, and one in five children diagnosed in the U.S. will not survive. With only 4 percent of all federal cancer research funding dedicated to pediatric cancer research, St. Baldrick’s Foundation volunteers, supporters and donors are needed to continue the battle against this devastating disease.
“We understand that shaving your head may not be for everyone,” says Poppy Behrens, event coordinator and publisher at Phoenix-based MiniCo Insurance Agency LLC. “There are other ways that you can be involved. You can sign up as a volunteer, attend the event where Tim Finnegan’s will donate all proceeds from the St. Baldrick’s Buffet to the foundation, participate in our raffle or silent and live auctions, set up a fundraising page, make a donation on behalf of a participant (or to the event as a whole) or simply help us by spreading the word.” One raffle on the day of the event will be for a vintage Schwinn Stingray bicycle.
In addition, Wigs for Kids will be on hand for those who wish to donate their hair—even if they just want it cut not shaved. For over 30 years, Wigs for Kids has been providing Hair Replacement Solutions and support to children who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy, radiation therapy, alopecia, trichotillomania, burns and other medical issues. Founded by Jeffrey and Zina Paul, Wigs for Kids allows children to continue in their active lifestyles without feeling insecure about their appearances.
Also on hand at the event will be the Phoenix Police Department SWAT Team and the Phoenix Fire Department with their trucks and gear on display. Special children’s activities will include face painting, a coloring table, and an opportunity to make cards for kids with cancer.
“Since 2005, nearly $2 million in St. Baldrick’s grants have gone to institutions in the Phoenix area including Phoenix Children’s Hospital,” says Behrens. “We are looking forward to this event and hope everyone will come out and join us in the fight against childhood cancer—whether you decide to shave your head, volunteer, or donate!”
