The New Jersey bar exam is two days long and is administered twice a year: once in February and once in July. The first day of the exam is the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE), prepared by the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE). The MBE consists of 200 multiple-choice questions on the following subjects: contracts, criminal law, constitutional law, real property, evidence, and torts. The MBE is broken up into two three-hour testing periods consisting of 100 questions each, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.
The second day of the New Jersey bar exam is made up of seven 45-minute essay questions drafted by the New Jersey Board of Bar Examiners. These essay questions are designed to examine one’s ability to reason, analyze and act like an attorney. The essay questions are on the following topics: contracts, criminal law, real property, torts, constitutional law, evidence and civil procedure. The questions may overlap subjects and could be interrelated with the following topics, as well: agency, conflicts of law, corporations, equity, family law, partnership, Uniform Commercial Code Articles 2, 3, and 9, wills, trusts, and estates, zoning and planning, and disciplinary rules.
There are two testing periods on the second day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The first is made up of a three-hour testing period consisting of four essay questions. The second is made up of a two-hour and fifteen-minute period consisting of three essay questions.
