Author Strikes Gold With Debut Novel at Authorsdb.com
(PRWEB) February 06, 2014 -- Entering the authorsdb.com 2013 book cover competition was a smart move for upcoming author Julie Frayne. The cover of her first book, SUICIDE CITY, was awarded two gold medals and shot her straight into the Authorsdb.com Weekly TOP10 author's list since the announcement.
Julie described the award winning cover: "Drug paraphernalia strewn on a wooden surface is juxtaposed over heart-shaped blood spatter. Light glints off the needle and the cooking spoon to draw the eye in. From there, you follow a trail of spilled heroin up into the cityscape of a large urban centre hidden within the title. The entire cover illustrates the dichotomy between themes that battle within the story - love and addiction, love and loss, love and death.
"The designer, Dane Low, did a great job. I had a vague idea including the use of the heroin needle and a pool of heart-shaped blood. Frankly, after I sent him that I almost recanted, thinking it might come off as corny or contrived. But it did not. It was awesome!
"The initial idea was mine. He did the rest. I did not know what to expect when I clicked open the first draft I actually gasped, out loud. Then had a little cry. All happy reactions—and a bit of relief. I wanted the cover to have an impact, and it most definitely does!
"I wanted it to represent the grittiness of the story since it is edgy 'Young Adult' (explicit drug use, sex, self-abuse are all described). I did not want readers of any age to be surprised by the text if the title didn't already give away what they might find. And I didn't want faces. I like to imagine what characters look like when I read so thought the readers of SUICIDE CITY would appreciate that as well.
"Unless you are a designer by trade, my advice is to go pro. It's the first impression your book makes on a reader. It should pop off the screen and demand attention. Get some recommendations from other authors. I encourage any author who knows how great their cover is to enter the Authorsdb 2014 cover contest (and 2015 too). Good luck!"
