Evidence in Motion (EIM) is proud to announce that Dr. Josh Cleland, PT, PhD has been selected to receive the Rose Excellence in Research Award at the upcoming American Physical Therapy Association’s Combined Sections Meeting (CSM) which will take place February 3rd-6th, 2014 at The Venetian and Sands Expo Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Rose Excellence in Research Award is given annually to the primary author of the article that has the most significant impact, immediate or potential, upon the practice of orthopaedic physical therapy. Seven journals, including JOSPT, are screened for eligible papers. Dr. Cleland, et al.’s Manual Physical Therapy and Exercise Versus Supervised Home Exercise in the Management of Patients with Inversion Ankle Sprains: A Multicenter Randomized Clinical Trial, which was printed in the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy (JOSPT) in July 2013, was selected as the best research article of 2013.
The article was co-authored by EIM faculty member Dr. Paul Mintken, PT, PhD, Amy McDevvitt, DPT, Melanie Bieniek, DPT, Kristen Carpenter, DPT, Katherine Kulp, DPT, and EIM Manual Physical Therapy Fellowship & Postprofessional DPT Director Dr. Julie Whitman, PT, DSc, OCS, FAAOMPT.
Dr. Cleland will share his research in a 30-minute presentation followed by a question session at 3:00 PM on February 5th, 2014. He will then be presented with the award at 6:30 PM. Manual Physical Therapy and Exercise Versus Supervised Home Exercise in the Management of Patients with Inversion Ankle Sprains: A Multicenter Randomized Clinical Trial details a randomized study that was conducted to compare the effectiveness of manual therapy and exercise (MTEX) to a home exercise program (HEX) in the management of individuals with an inversion ankle sprain. The study found that improvements in all functional outcome measures and pain were significantly greater for MTEX individuals at both the 4-week and 6-month follow-up periods.
