Brooklyn Decker Join the Sierra Club for the Launch of Sierra Club Outdoors
(PRWEB) February 03, 2014 -- Today, the Sierra Club announced the launch of Sierra Club Outdoors, a new campaign with old roots in the organization. The campaign works to get 250,000 people out into nature every year to explore and enjoy our planet, with a special emphasis on youth, military veterans and their families. Actress and Sierra Club Ambassador Brooklyn Decker joined an outing with Iraq war veterans in Los Angeles’ Griffith Park, ending up beneath the iconic Hollywood sign where she heard the vets tell firsthand accounts of the transformative power of getting outdoors. Numerous studies show that exercise, physical activity and outdoor recreation activities can have positive effects on depression, stress, and self-esteem.
“This program is very personal to me,” says actress Brooklyn Decker. “It fuses two of my great passions – our veterans and outdoor recreation. It’s incredibly important to provide our heroes with healthy outlets to help them cope with any struggles they may be dealing with upon their return and to make their transition from soldier to civilian a little easier.”
Leading the outing was Stacy Bare, director of Sierra Club Outdoors, himself a veteran of Iraq and Bosnia who credits rock-climbing and the outdoors with helping him overcome post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and rebuild his life.
"Life experience has left me believing in the healing power of time spent in nature," said Stacy Bare. "Access to our nation's outdoors spaces and wild places—around the corner and across the country—ought not to be exclusive. I look forward to leading Sierra Club Outdoors and ensuring that access to nature is available to anyone who wants and needs it."
