Denver, CO (PRWEB) February 04, 2014
Now in its seventh year, the National Investment Banking Competition (NIBC) is an international event, attracting undergraduate and MBA students from the top universities across North America, Asia and Europe, with the opportunity to attain international recognition from their peers and senior industry professionals.
This year’s competition required participants to perform a valuation of Lions Gate Media, the movie production company responsible for box office hits such as The Hunger Games and The Twilight Series. Of the 225 teams that entered the competition, only 16 MBA teams were invited to the final round, held in Vancouver, Canada. This year, the University of Denver’s Daniels College of Business had two groups make it to the final round. These groups were also comprised of three of SDR Venture’s current and former interns - Colin Gorey, Tim Powers, and David Purinton.
Daniels Career Services has collaborated with SDR since 2010 to create a premiere internship that gives students hands on, real-world experience working in an investment bank. “We obtain the best and brightest interns through our association with the Daniels College of Business,” remarked Chris Bouck, Principal at SDR Ventures. “Our goal with the intern program has always been to provide students with an experience where they learn market-driven skills, which can then be used in real-world business situations.”
The NIBC is the perfect opportunity to use the knowledge gained in the classroom as well as internships. The final round of the competition required participants to structure an acquisition of Lions Gate by Time Warner, and present the deal structure to a panel of investment bankers and private equity managers.
After grueling hours of analysis and presentations, one of the DU teams was awarded 3rd place out of 16 finalist teams overall. SDR intern David Purinton credits his teams 3rd place performance to both his Daniels education and SDR internship.
“I’m grateful to have done so well in the competition but it was my first class business education and financial foundation that I learned from the Daniels College of Business that helped my team finish in the top three,” David said. “The real accolades go to the SDR team. When I came to SDR as an intern, I knew very little about investment banking, and the team was patient in teaching me the skills I needed to perform so well. SDR is a special investment bank that thrives on personal customer service and attention.”
The SDR team is growing and always looking for new talent to join its team. Recruiting for the new intern class has started, and if you are interested in becoming a member of the intern program, contact the Daniels Career Services office at danielscareers(at)du(dot)edu or SDR Ventures at awong(at)sdrventures(dot)com today.
