Portland, OR Named No. 1 City White People Like

Movoto Real Estate has ranked America’s largest cities using criteria from the blog ‘Stuff White People Like’ to determine which fit the self-skewering stereotypes–and which pale by comparison.

As part of its ongoing mission to explore “the lighter side of real estate,” Movoto Real Estate, a leading online brokerage, has announced the results of its satirical quest to name the 10 American cities white people like most. At the top of the list, donning a microfleece vest and holding an organic fair trade coffee, is Portland, OR.

To create the ranking, Movoto used criteria based on the popular blog “Stuff White People Like” by author Christian Lander. One hundred of the country’s largest cities were then evaluated on such factors as microbreweries, roller derby teams, and “the idea of soccer.” When the sushi and vintage clothing had settled, the cities white people like most are:

1. Portland, OR
2. San Francisco, CA
3. St. Paul, MN
4. Jersey City, NJ
5. Irvine, CA
6. Seattle, WA
7. Washington, D.C.
8. Minneapolis, MN
9. Atlanta, GA
10. Glendale, CA

“From determining America’s nerdiest cities to naming the worst-dressed spots in the country, the Movoto Blog has been at the forefront of innovative–often humorous–ways to rank places across the nation,” said Director of Marketing Chris Kolmar. “We don’t just pick winners willy-nilly, however; these rankings are all based on hard data, even when it’s the number of Ed Hardy stores or semi-professional rugby teams in a city.”

Other factors looked at in the ranking include the per capita number of Asian fusion restaurants, Apple Stores, farmers’ markets, and vintage shops. More than 25 criteria in all were used to determine the winners.
