Post it, Tag it, Share it… Like it or not; with over 1.2 billion active users, Facebook has become arguably the most influential element of our society’s online experience! Although Facebook and other social media sites are a great way for people to stay “connected” with friends and family, it also connects them to many unsuspecting Internet security risks.

SecurityCoverage Inc. today released an original new infographic showing how the explosion of Facebook and other social networking sites has created a whole new set of online security problems. The infographic focuses on personal security and how simple preventative measures combined with protection like SecurityCoverage’s Tech Home Solution can help keep users and their devices secure in today’s hyper-social world.

Follow these simple tips created by The National Cyber Security Alliance to safely enjoy social networking:

  • Privacy and security settings exist for a reason: Learn more about and use the privacy and security settings on social networking sites. They are there to help you control who sees what you post and manage your online experience in a positive way.
  • Once posted, always online: Protect your reputation on social networks. What you post online stays online. Think twice before posting pictures and information you wouldn’t want your parents or future employer to see.
  • Keep personal info personal: Be cautious about how much personal information you provide on social networking sites. The more information you post, the easier it may be for a hacker or someone else to use that info to steal your identity, access your data, or commit other crimes such as stalking.
  • Know and manage your friends: Social networks can be used for a variety of purposes. Some of the fun is creating a large pool of friends from many aspects of your life. That doesn’t mean all friends are created equal. Use tools to manage the information you share with friends in different groups or even have multiple online pages.
  • When in doubt, throw it out: Links in posts, tweets, e-mails, and other online advertising are often the way cyber criminals compromise your computer. If it looks suspicious, even if you know the source, its best to delete.
  • Keep a clean machine: Having the latest anti-virus and anti-theft security software, web browser, and operating system are the best defense against viruses, malware, and other online threats. Password managers such as Password Genie are another resource to keeping your personal information safe.
