Dan Rhatigan, type director at Monotype, will present a Letter Exchange lecture on the growth and evolution of the Gill Sans® typeface family at The Art Workers’ Guild in London. He will present “Gill Sans after Gill,” which examines how the Gill Sans family was developed and produced into typefaces by the Monotype Drawing Office. The presentation will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014, from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Rhatigan will discuss the evolution of the Gill Sans family, released in 1928. He will also share how Gill Sans was developed and produced by the Monotype Drawing Office and provide an overview of the detailed production methods used by the draftsmen and technicians of the Monotype Works in Salfords, England, who turned Gill’s concept of sans serif letterforms into fully realized typefaces. Rhatigan will provide examples of the ample drawings, samples and correspondence held in the Monotype archive.
