Melbourne scientists have discovered that the immune system is constantly fighting cells that are potentially cancerous reports Nature World News on Friday 3rd February 2014. According to the scientists, the cells within the body are continuously changing, and some are even potentially cancerous. However, these cells never grow to the deadliest potential as the immune system quickly detects and kills them regularly. The researchers investigated the development of B-cell lymphomas and discovered that the immune system played a prominent role in controlling the cancer. The random mutations that occur in the immune B cells occur as a result of the normal function. However, Dr Axel Kallies says, “Our finding that immune surveillance by T cells enables early detection and elimination of these cancerous and pre-cancerous cells provides an answer to this puzzle, and proves that immune surveillance is essential to preventing the development of this blood cancer.”
