Connected Nation is issuing the following statement from President and COO Tom Ferree regarding today’s announcement by President Obama that the Federal Communications Commission will invest $2 billion during the next two years on high-speed Internet in schools and libraries, and that $750 million in additional commitments from the private sector have been secured for the effort. The efforts are part of the President’s ConnectED initiative:

“We’re extremely pleased that President Obama’s education technology initiative announced today will include $200 million in commitments for off-campus broadband connectivity. Connected Nation has championed the importance of off-campus access to learning tools before the FCC, and we are extremely pleased to see the President make it a priority in his ConnectED initiative. Learning in the twenty-first century need not stop at the classroom door. As technology allows for more individualized and engaging learning experiences via 1:1 devices, it is absolutely essential that all of our nation’s students have access to web-based content and apps no matter where they are, especially for the 15 million students who do not have broadband access at home.”

Connected Nation is a leader in the education-technology field with its Edified program; an education initiative that seeks to increase the deployment of the latest mobile technology, robust wireless connectivity, education apps, and twenty-first century teaching practice in America’s K-12 schools, colleges, and universities.
