ISE Exchange Student is a Finalist for the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards
Bunker Hill, IN (PRWEB) February 05, 2014 -- YeEun, an ISE exchange student, is a finalist for the nationals Scholastic Art & Writing Award. Her drawings will be displayed in Washington, DC until the announcement of the winner.
YeEun is from South Korea. She came to the US to experience a new culture and to refine her English speaking skills. She was placed with the Bourne family, who live in Bunker Hill, IN. She currently attends Peru High School.
At school, YeEun decided to take an art class. That’s where she met her teacher Mr. Applegate. Right off, Mr. Applegate noticed her unique drawing talent. He encouraged her to enter some of her work in the contest.
“I was surprised because I didn’t really draw very much back home. This was all very new to me,” explained YeEun.
YeEun decided to participate, but wasn’t sure what to draw. She was over at her host grandmother’s house to make gingerbread houses. It was there she saw the candy bowl and decided to create a picture of it.
“I loved the colors of the candy, so I thought it would be an interesting picture,” stated YeEun.
YeEun then saw her host sister practice ballet. She thought she was so beautiful. She decided to draw her host sister on her toes. Then she was at a friend’s house still having trouble thinking of another subject to draw. Her friend suggested that she draw his grandpa’s old shoes. YeEun found very funny but decided to do it.
Over 4000 entries were submitted. Three of YeEun’s entries, the Candy Bowl, the Ballet Shoes and Grandpa’s Shoes, were selected to go Washington to be displayed. The winner for the contest will receive a scholarship.
YeEun loves living the US and thinks her host family and friends are great. She says this whole experience has motivated her to continue her dream of being an architect.
