Sharon Kleyne Hour: Seven Years of Making News and Influencing Water Policy
Grants Pass, OR (PRWEB) February 05, 2014 -- When a high-ranking water policy official, discussing the record breaking California drought, hung up on radio host Sharon Kleyne during an on-air interview, Kleyne knew that people were finally taking her show and message seriously. Kleyne’s show, Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water® will soon mark its seventh anniversary on the air. During that time, Kleyne’s 298 shows and 377 guests have taken the lead in educating the public about numerous global water related issues that are only now becoming critical in the pubic mind.

Despite the guest phone hang-up, Kleyne explains, she makes every attempt to fairly present all sides of an issue and allow people to state their case. She may ask occasional challenging questions but the goal is to respectfully understand, not to put guests on the spot. The phone hang-up occurred when a guest who opposed allocating water for agriculture over human consumption, was asked if she believed that agricultural irrigation helped to recharge the ground water aquifers.
Kleyne believes that water is the basis for life, health and all economic growth. She expresses deep concern that politicians in California, other states and numerous countries of the world, lack the foresight to make water supply and sanitation their number one propriety.
Numerous shows, in the past few years, have been devoted to educating the pubic about the worsening drought crisis in California and other states. Guests have included several California water officials and environmental advocates. Other guests have talked about related subjects such as household versus agricultural water allocation, aquifer mining in Death Valley, global drought, drought and climate change, interstate and intrastate water wars, the water crisis in Tombstone, Arizona, dry land farming, water conservation, international models for water independence, World Water Day and much more.
Atmospheric water is also a major concern of Kleyne’s. Various guests have explained that gasified water, or “humidity,” is by far the most abundant greenhouse gas and a principal driver of global weather patterns. Several guests have warned that widespread global air pollution affects the amount and quality of the air’s water vapor, and the ability of gasified water to reach the upper atmosphere to form rain and moderate atmospheric warming.
A frequent guest has been, L. DeWayne Cecil, PhD. Cecil is the show’s Atmospheric Science Consultant and a former Climatologist for NASA and NOAA specializing in long-term global weather prediction. Cecil has noted that pollution caused changes in the atmosphere’s water vapor content is a cause of widespread physical dehydration that is affecting human health and life worldwide.
Another frequent topic is the global dry eye health crisis, which was largely ignored by the media until Kleyne began publicizing it. Dry eye is related to drought and low atmospheric humidity because both can increase the rate at which water evaporates out of the ocular tear film, which is 98% water. In the last 20 years, according to Kleyne’s guests, dry eye has become the number one reason for eye doctor visits in the United States. In countries such as China and India, dry eye syndrome and related diseases are a major public health crisis and a frequent cause of blindness.
Of Kleyne’s 298 shows, 27 offered education about dry eye, vision care and natural supplementation of tear film water. More than half the 298 shows dealt with water related health issues such as diet and nutrition, lifestyle, water access and sanitation, dehydration diseases and much, much more.
