M&L Special Needs Planning, LLC Offers Special Needs Housing Options To Older Adults With Disabilities
Washington, DC (PRWEB) February 18, 2014 -- M&L Special Needs Planning, LLC is a company committed to helping families with special needs plan for the future of their family member(s) with disabilities. These financial planning experts are now announcing the release of their independent housing database that aims to help parents with adult children with special needs. M&L Special Needs Planning is now also involved in setting up new housing option MD, VA, and DC, and is inviting anyone interested to join their workshops on February 26th, 2014.
In the last year, M&L expanded their services to focus on helping families with special needs find appropriate and affordable housing options for their family members with disabilities. In their latest weekly blog post, M&L talks about their commitment to housing, emphasizing that it is a multigenerational concern, and not just an issue for new and young adults. As the planning company writes on their blog, “when many of our clients think about or search for special needs housing, it is from the perspective of the young adult – those individuals with disabilities who are beginning to embark on an adult life, and are looking to create an independent and self-sufficient future. It is easy to overlook those of a different generation – those adult individuals with disabilities who left the school system and then remained at home with parents.”
As M&L staff point out, it is essential for the parents of these older adults with disabilities to begin planning for the future of these individuals. According to M&L founder and owner, Maedi Tanham Carney, CFP®, CWIC, “If there is no planning, and there are no family members or siblings willing to assume care of the individual with special needs, then that individual becomes a ward of the state.”
M&L offers the following housing services to parents of individuals with disabilities, regardless of the age of their child with special needs:
Housing Financial Services: When looking for special needs housing, the main concern may be, “how will it be paid for?” If this is the case, M&L’s offers their Comprehensive Special Needs Financial Life Plan as an option. M&L works families as they complete this plan, identifying financial assets and resources, and identifying goals. They also identify any financial gaps that may exist between the family’s assets and goals, and work on ways to close those gaps. They also help with government benefits and the Special Needs Trust – if a child with special needs does not receive government benefits, they can help with the application for them– in 2013, M&L has a 100% success rate with applying for these benefits. Once a child (or if he or she already does) receives these benefits, M&L can help organize the Special Needs Trust in such a way as these benefits are protected. They can also provide counselling as to funding the special needs trust with life insurance policies, etc. as a method of funding the housing option.
Finding a Housing Option: M&L Special Needs Planning recently launched their one-of-a-kind Independent Living Program and Housing Project database to help families with their search for special needs housing options. This database is a one-stop shop for all special needs housing needs. There are more than 800 entries of independent living programs and housing options from across the United States, as well as important special needs housing information such as grant programs, service providers, special needs organizations, and important studies and research pertaining to special needs housing. In addition to this, M&L periodically adds special needs planning informational videos to the database. The database is also updated monthly to reflect the addition of new programs, information, etc. and also to make any changes to programs, etc. that are currently in the database.
Developing a Housing Option: If one cannot find a housing option that suits their needs, M&L Special Needs Planning, LLC is currently working on two housing development projects – M&L is heading to Evanston, Illinois with a group of families to take part in the Centre for Independent Future’s New Futures Initiatives training. This training will enable families to replicate their Community Option Residences in a location of their choice. M&L Special Needs Planning is also working on a independent housing development coalition which is examining methods of developing housing opportunities for individuals with special needs in the MD, VA and D.C. area in the next one to two years. For more information, M&L is offering a Housing Update Workshop, taking place on Wednesday, February 26th in Rockville, MD. Please contact M&L for more information, or to register for this workshop.
