Buyers Beware! Dr. F. Victor Rueckl, Lakes Dermatology, Las Vegas, Stated Today That What Some Estheticians Claim is Pure Nonsense
Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) February 08, 2014 -- A facial is one of the most incredibly nice benefits of self indulgence. Normally during the 30 to 90 minute procedure, a client’s skin will be steamed, cleaned, exfoliated, and buttered with a variety of mineral-containing masks, oddly-named serums, and moisturizers that promise the moon, sun and stars.
The mind-numbing music playing in the background takes the client to far away places along with rejuvenated skin and a peaceful mind. The client may also leave the spa with a few choice suggestions offered by the esthetician, and if the client was under the spell of the aromatherapy, soothing music and steam vapors, he/she might not see through the fog of esthetician speak. These comments from the esthetician range from the transformative powers of the treatment at hand to at-home strategies that will rev up and maintain the newly found radiance. While many of her observances and tips may be indisputable others require a dose of healthy dose of skepticism.
"I call it a sales pitch because there isn’t a lot of science behind many of the claims that emanate from these estheticians," says Dr. F. Victor Rueckl of Lakes Dermatology in Las Vegas. Rueckl continued, “Relax and enjoy the process, but take the advice with a grain of salt. There’s nothing wrong with having a facial to relax, but don’t believe that it will have major therapeutic effects.”
Are You Dry or Dehydrated?
Most estheticians turn on an intensely bright light to inspect the client’s skin after a good scrubbing. With a bit of concern in her voice, she’ll deliver the worrisome results and her concerns. “Your skin is very dry.” Dr. Rueckl cautions, “It’s easy to be confused about dry skin. Is your skin really dry or is it dehydrated? You don’t want to just start slathering emollients on your skin because you believe that you are akin to the Sahara desert. In fact, adding oils to dehydrated skin can cause the opposite and desired results. It’s best to see a dermatologist if you suspect that your skin is truly dry. We have prescription lotions that will change your skin tone and texture without fragrance and oils.”
Rueckl continued, “Truly dry skin types don’t make enough sebum, so they require a moisturizer to restore the balance. Chances are that when the esthetician was busily scrubbing your face, she removed all the natural oils. It takes about 45 minutes for most faces to become lubricated naturally.”
This Treatment Will Shrink Your Pores
The size of your hair follicles is largely determined by genetics (sun damage and age later play a role too), and there’s nothing anyone can do to downsize them. Dr. Rueckl said, “You can make pores appear smaller just by cleaning out the dirt and debris or using a skin-tightening astringent but unfortunately, that effect lasts about two to three hours. If this is the look you are seeking, we can effect a tightening with our Venus Freeze equipment.”
You're Eating Too Much (insert food group here)
"With the exception of nutritional deficiencies, it’s ridiculous to suggest that anyone including a doctor can see anything about your diet just by looking at your skin,” said Dr. Rueckl. He went on to say, “If you suspect you have a sensitivity to a particular food or food group, I’ll send you to an internist or an allergist, who can help you figure out the cause.”
You May Break Out After The Facial
“Breaking out after a facial occurs because the esthetician used the wrong products on you or didn’t treat the pores correctly,” said Rueckl. “We have many products that we prescribe to treat acne and we offer a procedure that will produce amazing results when our patients stick with the program.”
I’m putting Collagen on your face to help smooth wrinkles.
“Collagen is a great lubricant,” says Dr. Rueckl. “But, under no circumstances can it penetrate the skin; the molecules are too big.” Rueckl continued, “There isn’t a moisturizer out there that can reverse collagen loss, making lines and wrinkles evaporate. We have several pieces of equipment that do stimulate collagen renewal but it too is a commitment to many visits.”
These products are chemical free so they won’t harm skin.
“Many people with sensitive skin can be irritated by or allergic to plant-based ingredients like lavender, pumpkin, or cinnamon. In fact, those limp plumping products contain cinnamon because it irritates the lips!” said Rueckl.
You should have a facial every month to keep your skin clear.
“No one needs to have a facial every four weeks,” says Dr. Rueckl. “If you take care of your skin on a daily basis, committing to a regimen that involves regular cleaning and exfoliation you may not need the professional treatment at all. If you love the feeling, then by all means treat yourself,” Dr. Rueckl said.
Drink a ton of water to flush out the toxins.
“Let’s face it. There are no toxins to flush out, and water has no hydrating effect on skin,” says Dr. Rueckl. “Interestingly enough, too much hydration is dangerous. In fact, people have died from drinking too much water. In point of fact, there are no studies linking water to good skin. Water is essential to good health, in support of the kidneys, digestive tract, and more. But as your mother used to say, ‘everything in moderation’.”
