Houston, TX (PRWEB) February 10, 2014 -- ELECTRICITY
Extremes:
1. Highest bill: Charlotte, NC at $169.90
2. Lowest bill: Los Angeles, CA at $55.62
3. Largest Month over Month (MOM) increase: Philadelphia, PA from $64.27 to $119.81
4. Largest MOM decrease: Portland, OR from $154.07 to $151.09
The city with the highest bill for January was Charlotte, NC at $169.90. Electricity rates in Charlotte held steady, but usage increased significantly compared to December. In fact, Charlotte had the 2nd highest usage of all the cities in the index for January. The city with the greatest increase in their monthly bill was Philadelphia, PA from $64.27 in December to $119.81 in January. This increase was due to a higher electricity rate for the month of January.
Los Angeles, CA had the lowest bill at $55.62 in January. This is typical for Los Angeles, as winter temperatures have remained warm for that region. Portland, OR saw the largest month over month decrease, which was a decrease of $2.98 compared to its December average bill. This was not a very significant change, as the electric rates remained the same month over month.
NATURAL GAS
Extremes:
1. Highest bill: Philadelphia, PA at $237.22
2. Lowest bill: Dallas, TX at $18.39
3. Largest MOM increase: Philadelphia, PA from $113.46 to $237.22
4. Largest MOM decrease: Portland, OR from $143.58 to $104.65
Philadelphia, PA claimed the top spot with the highest natural gas bill at $237.22 in January. Indianapolis, IN came in 2nd at $200.60. Multiple arctic blasts swept through this region through the end of January, increasing usage. This frigid trend will continue into the next month.
Dallas, TX, once again had the lowest natural gas bill at $18.39 for the month of January. The usage and natural gas rates remained fairly steady for that region. As the winter season continues, we should see most of the northern region’s natural gas rates remain high. As a result, this will assist the southern states to maintain the lowest natural gas bills in the country.
Philadelphia, PA also had the largest month over month increase, from $113.46 in December to $237.22 in January. Below freezing temperatures, as well as higher natural gas usage were the primary reasons for this increase.
The city that saw the largest month over month decrease was Portland, OR, from $143.58 to $104.65. This large decrease was due to a steady air stream that blocked the cold arctic air from reaching this region. The state of California to the south benefited from this as well, keeping temperatures unusually warm for the month of January.
As the winter season continues, we should see a few more arctic blasts pass through the Midwest and northeastern region of the country, ultimately increasing the need for natural gas.
