Inmar, a company that operates intelligent commerce networks and Authentix, Inc., a provider of leading product authentication solutions for brand owners and governments, announced that Steve Dollase, president, Inmar Supply Chain Network, will team up with Jim Rittenburg, vice president, Healthcare and Life Sciences at Authentix to present findings from a new industry report "Brand Protection and Supply Chain Integrity: Methods for Counterfeit Detection, Prevention and Deterrence" at the GMA/FMI Supply Chain Conference, February 17 – 19 in Orlando, FL.
Experts acknowledge counterfeiting as one of the fastest growing global industries. As counterfeiters become more sophisticated, well-planned efforts to stop counterfeit from entering the legitimate supply chain should be employed at all levels to reduce the risk of damage to the brand equity of manufacturers and retailers from adulterated and underperforming product. Ensuring product authenticity is a shared responsibility among manufacturers, distributors, retailers and consumers, and all will benefit.
The Trading Partner Alliance of the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) and Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) engaged Inmar and Authentix to produce “Brand Protection and Supply Chain Integrity: Methods for Counterfeit Detection, Prevention and Deterrence – A Best Practices Guide.” Based on surveys and interviews with manufacturers and retailers as well as industry experts, it presents best practices that could be employed to mitigate the risk of counterfeit product from entering the supply chain.
The best practices were developed by looking at the points within the legitimate supply chain and identifying where it is vulnerable to counterfeit product entering and becoming mixed with legitimate product. The best practices offer guidance to detect, prevent and deter counterfeit throughout the supply chain, from source products for manufacture to retail shelf and to post-counterfeit discovery. The guide also includes a “Risk Assessment Tool” to help manufacturers and retailers determine the ROI for their brand protection efforts. Benchmarking is also provided so manufacturers and retailers can compare efforts and policies to others within the CPG industry.
