New Book Explores History of Sherwood Inn on Lake Joseph
Muskoka, Ontario (PRWEB) February 25, 2014 -- Sherwood Inn on Lake Joseph (http://www.sherwoodinn.ca) is a traditional old-Muskoka inn, a throwback to the graceful bygone era of cottage country resorts built in the first half of the last century. Sherwood Inn reflects a long and rich history, 75 years of memories that will be explored within the pages of a new book authored by Andrew Hind and Maria Da Silva. Entitled "Sherwood Inn: 75 years of Memories on Lake Joseph," the richly illustrated book will trace the resort's fascinating history. Starting with Sherwood’s founding in 1939 by visionary Toronto-lawyer Harry Draper, the man who established the inn's outstanding reputation for excellence, the book will explore the Muskoka Inn’s history over the years, and how it fared through a variety of owners, up to the present day as a Clublink luxury resort.
Co-authors Andrew Hind and Maria Da Silva decided to write about Sherwood Inn because, after years of conducting research in the Muskoka area for previous books and articles, they came to understand that Sherwood Inn was a significant Muskoka landmark. They were charmed by the inn and with the way that it almost instantly pulls one back to a more elegant and gracious time. They were also curious as to how it had management to retain this illusion of timelessness, so complete that one might expect to see a steamship pull up to the main dock, just as it would have been commonplace in years past when the primary means of transportation to the inn was by water. Da Silva and Hind have conducted extensive research into Sherwood Inn's history, interviewing dozens of people, including the Heinicks who owned the inn for 20 years before selling it to Clublink in 1998. Both Da Silva and Hind are well-known authors, whose work has appeared in a variety of local publications, including Muskoka Life, the Muskokan, and Parry Sound Sideroads. Together, they have authored 15 books, including Muskoka Resorts: Then and Now, RMS Segwun: Queen of Muskoka, and Muskoka: Enchanting Stories of Ontario's Cottage Country. They are currently working on completing their book, which will be published later this year.
“We are extremely pleased that a book is being written about Sherwood Inn. I eagerly look forward to reading it to learn more about the inn and the history of the times,” states Esa Paltanen, General Manager of Sherwood Inn. “This year marks Sherwood Inn’s 75th anniversary and it is entirely fitting that our beautiful and historic Muskoka resort be commemorated in this way.
