“The Grumpies” Wins “Best in Show” Award at Dominion Enterprises’ Hackathon 7
Norfolk, VA (PRWEB) February 14, 2014 -- On February 6-7, 2014, Dominion Enterprises’ employees and students from local colleges and universities in Hampton Roads participated in Dominion’s second college Hackathon. Dominion Enterprises has hosted seven Hackathons since 2011 and plans to make college Hackathons an annual event. This two-day event took place at Dominion’s headquarters in Norfolk.
Teams this year designed and programmed working games, or game themed apps by utilizing nationally recognized API’s and API’s from the businesses owned by Dominion Enterprises. An API specifies a set of functions or routines that accomplish a specific task or are allowed to interact with a specific software component.
Teams included students from Norfolk State University, Christopher Newport University, ECPI University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Old Dominion University, William and Mary, and TideWater Community College.
Nine teams from seven schools began the morning of February 6 and continued through the next day. After this marathon programming session -- dubbed “two days of pure hack”-- the teams presented their creations to a panel of judges who awarded prizes to the best products in four categories: Best in Show, Most Innovative, Most Creative/Entertaining, and Best use of Appcelerator.
The winners of the event were:
Best in Show: Neighborhood Watch - ODU Team - “The Grumpies”
(Lookmai Rattana, Stanley Zheng, Jose Mateo and Trisha Tobias)
Most Innovative: Emoticaptcha -- ECPI University Team
(Adam Myers, Justin Norman, and Kenneth Crim)
Most Creative/Entertaining: TCC for Job-Jutsu - TCC Team - “Time Crunch Coders”
(Austin Krill, Daniel Burgner, and Michael Butler)
Best Use of Appcelerator: VCU for Boat Runner -- VCU Team - “Radical Rams”
(Robert Stump, Shaun Donachy, David Jackson, Brian Glass, and Allen Calderwood)
All participants received gifts and participated in raffles for swag and gift cards from local restaurants, the Google Playstore, Amazon, Starbucks and the like. Winning teams took home Google Chromecast devices, and the team members of ODU’s team, “The Grumpies,” who earned Best in Show, won Nexus 7 tablets.
