Crude-by-rail offers flexibility for growing oil production

“The rail system in North America reaches every producing area in the United States and Canada, as well as every potential market area," said Robert Barton, Genscape’s senior director of oil products.

Five years ago, railroads were moving an insignificant share of U.S. crude oil production. Today, crude-by-rail is the fastest-growing oil transportation option in North America, and both loading and unloading capacity is expected to increase significantly. Genscape's monitoring network offers the most comprehensive view into crude transport by rail, expanding every day to keep pace with this rapidly growing trend.

While domestic oil production in shale formations continues to ramp up, pipeline infrastructure in those areas remains largely insufficient, and rail shipments are increasing rapidly. Genscape predicts that despite some new construction, pipeline infrastructure does not offer as much flexibility and rail will continue to play a significant role in moving crude in North America.

“The rail system in North America reaches every producing area in the United States and Canada, as well as every potential market area. This gives producers the flexibility to transport their oil to the markets that offer the best possible netbacks in an environment where prices change constantly, and drastically. It also gives refiners the flexibility to buy and transport the specific type of oil they need for their individual crude slates,” said Robert Barton, Genscape’s senior director of oil products.

Genscape will present “A Study on Rail Activity and Price Movements in North America” on Tuesday, February 18 at 3PM EST as a complimentary, educational webinar to discuss crude-by-rail in the context of the North American crude oil market. This presentation will explore the effects of price spreads on rail shipments of crude oil from the Bakken and Canada, as well as other factors, including freight transportation costs, rail-car lease rates and producer netbacks. The webinar will be highly relevant for traders, analysts, and producers who want to make more informed trading decisions, optimize their positions, and gain insight on key market drivers.

Genscape’s proprietary monitors track the number of trains moving and the number of cars per train, resulting in a highly accurate calculation of product volumes. Subscribers of Genscape’s weekly PetroRail newsletter receive weekly market commentary (price data, calculated producer netbacks, and tabular data), market data (detailed data on rail loadings and unloadings as well as an up-to-date map showing rail transportation costs), and U.S. and Canadian rail shipment information. Subscribers use this fundamental data and expert analysis to develop new trading strategies, identify competitors' economics and determine the price of the marginal barrel.
